About This Work

“Gospel Song for a Rainy Day” was inspired by the line spoken by the first Witch in William Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’: "When shall we three meet again, In thunder, lightning, or in rain?"

Opening with the sound of rain and distant thunder (Effect provided on CD), a lone off-stage Trumpeter plays a haunting melody followed by the Brass Section performing a richly harmonised ‘Gospel Song’. There quickly follows a driving dance in 10/8, which drives away the blues and hints at better things to come.

Composed and arranged by Geoff Kingston “Gospel Song for a Rainy Day” is a new and highly programmable work for Concert Band that will not only enchant your audience but is challenging and great fun to play; a must for 2008!
