Jonathan started to play brass instruments from an early age, starting on trumpet and gradually progressing to Tuba, which he studied with Andrew Duncan, from the Halle Orchestra.

In 1987, he started a degree course at Royal Holloway and Bedford College, where he further developed his interest in Church music and took on a number of organist positions, including Windsor Parish Church and St Mary’s Farnham Royal.

Postgraduate work led to an Erasmus scholarship to study the workings of the English and Burgundian Chapel’s Royal, which led to an extended period of study at the Universite de la Sorbonne as well as the appointment as organist of the Scot’s Kirk in Paris. Jonathan has subsequently been asked to contribute articles to a number of publications including the Dictionary of National Biography and the New Grove Dictionary of Music.

After University he worked for Surrey Youth Music as part of the Peripatetic instrumental team, before moving to take up the position of assistant Director of Music and Organist at Rossall School.

Since 2000, Jonathan has worked as Head of Brass and Keyboard for the Cumbria Schools Music Service, with a specific responsibility for Music ICT and composition.
