About This Work

"The Swan", (Le Cygne) is the 13th and penultimate movement of "The Carnival of the Animals" by Camille Saint-Saëns and originally scored for solo ‘Cello; accompanied by two pianos. The piece is in 6/4 time, with a key signature of Eb Major - the original being in G Major and has a tempo marking of Andantino grazioso. The slow melody is accompanied by almost constant broken chord figurations within the Clarinet section.

Scored as a solo for Euphonium and Concert Band by Geoff Kingston this is the only movement from "The Carnival of the Animals" that the composer allowed to be played in public during his lifetime. He thought the remaining movements were too frivolous and would damage his reputation as a serious composer. This beautiful and haunting melody is instantly recognisable and a standard within the repertoire.
