About This Work
Esprit de Corps
(Slow March of the Corps of Army Music)
"Esprit de Corps" composed and arranged by Gregory M Machin, came into being through a competition instigated by the Directorate, Corps of Army Music in 2012; the results of the competition were announced in June 2012. The world premiere of this, the winning composition, took place on 18th July 2012 at the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall. The timing of the announcement of the results was important to the composer as he was about to retire from the Army - this being an achievement of which he is extremely proud.
The march is intended to convey the pomp and ceremony of the State, Ceremonial function of the Bands of the Corps of Army Music. The audience should be able to close their eyes and conjure up scenes such as the Queen's Birthday Parade and picture the bands as they perform with a style and panache that have made them the envy of military musicians the world over.
The Composer
Greg Machin was born in Dover, Kent in 1972. Having studied piano, guitar and flute Greg enlisted into the Army in August of 1991. Greg served as a flautist in the Peninsula Band of the Royal Green Jackets and the Band of the Light Division. He served as Bandmaster of the Prince of Wales's Division (Lucknow) band and the Band of Her Majesty's Coldstream Guards. He has served all over the world both as a musician and also as a consultant training overseas military bands for UK Public Duties such as changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace.
As a composer, Greg has been very fortunate to write music for the Queen's Birthday Parade, Edinburgh Tattoo, The Festival of Remembrance, as well as for several high profile overseas tours.
Greg now lives in New York State with his wife and continues to write when the mood takes him. He enjoys writing to commission; for more information he can be contacted through SafeMusic.
