About This Work

"Centennial Celebration" is an original composition for Brass Band by Trevor Ford and was commissioned by the ‘Ron Brass Band' of Norway, conductor Jan Erik Helleren, for their 100 year anniversary.

The work is a set of five variations evolved entirely from a four note motif; the first four notes played.

The introduction, with the motif played by the Solo Eb Horn, gradually expands the basic idea in a slow leisurely manner for 46 bars. From the 47th bar the first variation changes the character of the theme to a rhythmic allegro. At 89 a pivot note in the Horn leads to the second variation, which is a dreamy waltz in ternary form. The waltz is followed, at 172, by variation 3 which has the character of a march. At 190 a contrasting passage is created by turning the theme upside down. The fourth and final variation begins at 237 and is a complete fugue. The original motif is now slightly changed to suite the minor mode. It should be noted that from the second beat of bar 269 the theme is played at half tempo by the lower brass and they should be the dominant group at this point.
