About Falcon March
After touring Germany in 1905, Carl Fischer published the Falcon March in 1907
dedicated to His Grace, the Prince of Stollberg-Wernigerode, a now-reorganized
southeast German region near Leipzig. Arthur Pryor's band made a Victor
record in June 1910, still available on an Archeophone CD: The original
edition contains many articulation discrepancies, problematic scoring in the trio,
and some passages without much harmony. This arrangement by Martin Charles Tousignant addresses these problems, clarifies the scoring, and adds consistent dynamics.
William Paris Chambers (1854-1913) moved to Newville, Pennsylvania USA as a
young boy. There his innate musical skill emerged quickly on cornet, and by age
18 he was conducting his own Keystone Concert Band. Likewise he advanced
rapidly as a conductor, so that by age 25 he was conducting the Capital City
Band in Harrisburg, along with the nearby bands in Chambersburg and
Martinsburg. At age 32 the Great-Southern in Baltimore, Maryland hired him to
conduct, solo, and tour, which he did from 1887-1893. His cornet playing became
famous enough to allow him to freelance in New York City. About this time he
began arranging and composing cutting-edge marches, beginning with the still famous
Chicago Tribune (1892) and The Boys of the Old Brigade (1901). Hoping
to regain his health and fortune, he returned to Newville in 1912 and died there.
